Explanation:

CST series of sleepers:

The CST series sleepers are a standard series of sleepers (like the CST-9 sleepers it is the ninth of the series produced by the Central Standard office). The CST (central Standard Trial) sleepers series are most widely used in Indian Railways (IR). The CST-9 sleeper consists of two triangular inverted pots on either side of the rail seat, a central plate with a projected keel, and a box on top of the plate. Cast iron is used for manufacturing the CST series of sleepers.

Composite sleeper index (CSI):

The composite sleeper index (CSI) is the hardness index of wood (timber) to determine the suitability of a particular timber to use as a sleeper.

\(C.S.I={S+10H\over 20}\)

Where CSI = composite sleeper index

S = Strength index of timber at 12% moisture content.

H = Hardness index of timber at 12% moisture content.

Hence only statement (ii) is correct.

Additional Information

The minimum prescribed values of C.S.I. by Indian Railways are as follows:

Type of sleepers CSI values
Track sleepers 783
Crossing sleepers 1352
Bridge sleepers 1455
