Question
Download Solution PDFWhat is the maximum limit of grade compensation for the gradient on the horizontal curve along highways, if ‘R’ is the radius of the circular curve in metres?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFExplanation:
A vehicle while traversing a sharp horizontal curve of the ruling gradient is subjected to the resistance offered due to gradient and resistance due to curvature. The additional resistance due to curvature is worked out on the consideration of gradient only. The gradient on curves is reduced to avoid resistance beyond a definite limit. This reduction is known as grade compensation on curves.
IRC gave the following empirical formula for the grade compensation:
Grade Compensation, GC = (30 + R)/R
But, Maximum value of grade compensation should not be greater than 75/R
Where R is the radius of the curve in meters.
Compensated Gradient = Ruling gradient – Grade Compensation
The further compensated gradient should not be less than 4 % as per IRC.
