The period of growing up to an adult from a child is known as adolescence. Adolescence is one of the important stages in the life span of a human being. It is the phase when very rapid changes take place both physically as well as psychologically.
Key PointsAdolescence is the period of development between childhood and adulthood”. A boy or girl enters adolescence as a child and emerges as a man or woman, expected to be ready to assume an adult role in society.
- For everybody, the years 11 to 18 are the most eventful. During these years there is rapid physical and sexual growth and maturation.
- The onset of puberty is generally accepted as the beginning of adolescence.
- Puberty happens to all individuals, whether boys or girls. In girls, it may start at the age of 9 or 11 and in boys it may begin around 12 or 13 years, although there is variation in the age from one person to the other. The age range of the puberty stage is 10-16 years.
- Girls experience puberty as a sequence of events, but their pubertal changes usually begin before boys of the same age.
- The first sign of puberty in girls is menstruation and in boys, nocturnal emission (ejaculation of semen during sleep).
Thus, it is concluded that the age range of 11 to 16 years is the puberty stage.
