Question
Download Solution PDFTom travelled 285 km in 6 hours. In his total travelling, he travelled the first part by bus at 40 km/hr and the remaining part by train at 55 km/hr. How much distance has he travelled by train?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
Total distance = 285 km
Total time = 6 hours
Speed by bus = 40 km/hr
Speed by train = 55 km/hr
Let distance travelled by bus = x km
Formula used:
Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Total time = Time by bus + Time by train
Calculations:
Time by bus = x ÷ 40
Time by train = (285 - x) ÷ 55
Total time = 6 hours
⇒ x ÷ 40 + (285 - x) ÷ 55 = 6
⇒ (55x + 40(285 - x)) ÷ (40 × 55) = 6
⇒ (55x + 11400 - 40x) ÷ 2200 = 6
⇒ (15x + 11400) ÷ 2200 = 6
⇒ 15x + 11400 = 13200
⇒ 15x = 13200 - 11400
⇒ 15x = 1800
⇒ x = 1800 ÷ 15
⇒ x = 120 km
Distance travelled by train = 285 - 120 = 165 km
∴ Distance travelled by train = 165 km
