Given:

A person divides his total route of journey into three equal parts and decides to travel the three parts at the speeds of 80 km/h, 60 km/h and 30 km/h, respectively.

Formula used:

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

Calculation:

Let total distance be 3D (since route is divided into three equal parts, each of distance D)

Time taken for first part = D / 80

Time taken for second part = D / 60

Time taken for third part = D / 30

Total Time = (D / 80) + (D / 60) + (D / 30)

⇒ Total Time = D (1/80 + 1/60 + 1/30)

⇒ Total Time = D (3/240 + 4/240 + 8/240)

⇒ Total Time = D (15/240)

⇒ Total Time = D / 16

Total Distance = 3D

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

⇒ Average Speed = 3D / (D / 16)

⇒ Average Speed = 3D × 16 / D

⇒ Average Speed = 48 km/h

∴ The correct answer is option (3).
