Download Solution PDFA boat takes half time in moving a certain distance downstream than upstream. The ratio of the speed of the boat in still water and that of the current is?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
A boat takes half the time in moving a certain distance downstream than upstream.
Concept used:
Distance = Speed × Time
Speed of boat in still water = p kmph
Speed of current = q kmph
Rate of downstream = (p + q) kmph
Rate upstream = (p – q) kmph
Calculation:
According to the above concept
Rate of downstream = (p + q) kmph
Rate upstream = (p – q) kmph
Distance = Speed × Time
⇒ (p – q) × 2t = (p + q) × t
⇒ 2p - 2q = p + q
⇒ 2p – q = 2q + q
⇒ p = 3q
⇒ \(\frac{p}{{q}}\) = \(\frac{3}{{1}}\)
∴ The required ratio is 3 : 1.
