The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) was initially known as the Department of Information and Technology, later renamed to its current nomenclature in 2012. It was a part of the Ministry of Communications, but in 2016, it was empowered with a separate portfolio, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. About the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) 

The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) comes under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, MeitY, at the Government of India level. This department is liable to lay down policies and plans for implementation in areas of electronics, information technology, and the internet. It advances enormous opportunities to move forward the digital agenda in India so that the country secures its rightful position in major achievements related to digital infrastructure, digital literacy, and e-governance. DeitY was merged with MeitY in 2016, but its main objectives and functions remain more or less intact in the new setup.
