Camber:
- It is the cross slope provided to raise the middle of the road surface in the transverse direction to drain off rainwater from the road surface.
- The objectives of providing camber are surface protection (especially for gravel and bituminous road), sub-grade protection, quick-drying of pavement which in turn increases safety.
- The required value of camber is dependent on the type of pavement and rainfall.
The table below depicts the camber value for different conditions:
Type of pavement |
Heavy Rainfall |
Light Rainfall |
Cement Concrete and high type bituminous surface |
1 in 50 |
1 in 60 |
Thin Bituminous surface |
1 in 40 |
1 in 50 |
WBM, gravel pavement |
1 in 33 |
1 in 40 |
Earthen roads |
1 in 25 |
1 in 33 |
Hence, Recommended value of camber for cement concrete road in heavy rainfall area is 2% or 1 in 50.
