Classification of overhead transmission line

Based on the length, the transmission line is classified as:

  • Short Transmission Line: Length < 80 km
  • Medium Transmission Line:  80 km < Length < 200 km. It is further classified into end condenser method, nominal π method, and nominal T method.
  • Long Transmission Line: Length > 200 km

1.) End condenser method

  • In the end condenser method, the capacitance of the transmission line is assumed to be concentrated at the receiving end (the load end) of the line.

2.) Nominal π method

  • In the nominal π model, a medium transmission line is represented by a series impedance (which accounts for the line's resistance and inductance) and shunt admittances (which account for the line's capacitance) that are split between the sending end and receiving end of the line.

3.) Nominal T method

  • In the Nominal T model, the transmission line is represented by a series impedance at the center of the line, two shunt admittances located at both the sending and receiving ends of the line.
