Failed in both = 18%

Calculation:

From the given data,

1425 students passed in both the sections

Total number of candidates = 100% - 18% = 82%

Let 'X' be the number of candidates passed in both the subjects

⇒ 80 + 77 - X = 82

⇒ 157 - X = 82

⇒ - X = 82 - 157

⇒ - X = - 75

⇒ X = 75

So, 75% of candidates passed in both the sections

⇒ 75% = 1425

Let the total number of candidates be 'Y'

⇒ 75% × Y = 1425

⇒ \( {75 \over 100}\)× Y = 1425

⇒ Y = \({1425 \;×\; 100 \over 75}\)

⇒ Y = 1900

∴ The total number of candidates appeared in competitive exam are 1900.
