Question
Download Solution PDFGiven below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A: Major advantage of DRAM is that the capacitor cell never loses its charge and hence there is no need to refresh periodically.
Reason R: When DRAM is being refreshed, the data cannot be accessed.
In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFA is false but R is true.
Due To Capacitor Leakage.
In DRAM, the binary data is stored as charge in capacitor where the presence and absence of charge determine the value of stored bit.
But data in the capacitor cannot be stored for a long time because a capacitor holds an electrical charge for the limited amount of time as the charge gradually drains away.
Since we know that capacitor loses its contents soon after being charged.
So we need to periodically refresh each DRAM bit before it completely loses its charge.
