CONCEPT:
- A geostationary satellite is an earth-orbiting satellite that revolves around the earth at the same time as the earth rotates along its axis.
- Due to the same time of the revolution, it appears stationary from the Earth, and hence it is called geostationary.
- The geostationary satellite is placed at about 35,800 km from the equator of Earth.
CALCULATION:
Time is taken by Earth to rotate = Time taken by geostationary satellite to revolve = 24 hours.
One revolution = 360∘
Angular speed = \(\frac{angular\: distance}{time \: taken} \)
\(= \frac{360^{\circ}}{24} = \frac{2π}{24} = \frac{π}{12}\) rad/hr (∵ 360∘ = 2π radians)
