Concept:

The following table shows the different compactors and their application in the field.

Equipment	Application
1. Rammers or Tampers	Used in confined areas. For all types of soils. Preferred for sands.
2. Smooth-wheel Rollers	Used for finishing operations after compaction of fills. Used for compacting granular base course of highways. Used to seal the surface of the fill at the end of the day’s work to provide a smooth surface for the quick drain of the rainwater.
3. Pneumatic-Tyred Rollers	Used for cohesive and cohesionless soils. Soil is compacted by kneading action only.
4. Sheep-foot rollers	Used for cohesive soils. Soil is compacted by the action of tamping and kneading.
5. Vibratory compactors	Also known as a vibrating-plate compactor. Used for compacting coarse-grained or granular soils. The use of these compactors is limited to the thickness of 1m.
