India Vs India A Day-1 Match Update: Captain Shubman Gill And KL Rahul Slam Fifties, Shardul Thakur Among Wickets

On the opening day of the intra-squad match between the Indian senior team and India A at Beckenham, skipper Shubman Gill and KL Rahul made solid contributions with the bat, while Shardul Thakur delivered a strong showing with the ball.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared photos from the day’s action on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, writing: “Beckenham. A solid Opening Day in the Intra-Squad game! Half-centuries for KL Rahul & Captain Shubman Gill. Shardul Thakur amongst the wickets.”

KL Rahul, in fine touch, supported his previous performances that included scores of 116 and 51 in the second unofficial Test against England Lions at Northampton.

Gill, who has struggled in English conditions with an average of just 14.66 and a highest score of 28 from six innings across three Tests, will take a great deal of confidence from his half-century as he looks to turn his fortunes around.

In the meantime, Thakur pursued his all-round claim for selection with scores of 27 (in the first unofficial Test), and 19 and 34 (in the second unofficial Test) and two wickets. The seam-bowling all-rounder is in the running for a spot in the XI, with young Nitish Kumar Reddy also seeking the role.

The next five-Test series against England, which starts on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds, will herald a new era for Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Tests, and Ravichandran Ashwin walking away from the international arena, leave newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill leading a rejuvenated Indian team into what is likely to be a defining series.

The tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with fixtures being played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord’s and The Oval (London), and Old Trafford (Manchester).
