NASA has confirmed its plan with SpaceX to bring back astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS) after a request from former President Donald Trump. NASA stated that the return will happen as soon as possible. Both astronauts have been stuck on the ISS since last year due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule.
As Reported by The Hindu, Donald Trump asked Elon Musk to ensure the safe return of the two NASA astronauts, who have been waiting on the space station for several months. He mentioned on social media, “I have asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to bring back these brave astronauts, who have been left in space by the Biden administration. They have been waiting at the space station for many months. Elon will be on his way soon for this mission. I hope everyone stays safe.”
Return Expected Before March
The return of Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore has been delayed multiple times. Recently, it was reported that they would return by late March 2025 or early April. However, following Trump’s involvement, there might be changes to this plan as NASA aims for an earlier return.
Sunita Williams launched to the ISS last summer for an eight-day mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Due to technical failures, her return has been postponed, extending their stay in space for nearly a year. Both astronauts are currently among seven crew members on the ISS and are in good health while conducting research.
Sunita’s Achievements
Sunita Williams, of Indian descent, has set a significant record in space. Along with Butch Wilmore, she has made it onto the list of astronauts with the most spacewalks. Sunita surpassed former astronaut Peggy Whitson’s record of 60 hours and 21 minutes spent on spacewalks.
The partnership between NASA and SpaceX is crucial for ensuring the safe return of these astronauts, demonstrating how important their work is for science and global progress.
