EXPLAINED: CBSE Class 10 & 12 Syllabus Cut And Open-Book Exams – What’s The Controversy?

Reports had previously circulated on several news outlets that CBSE had decided to reduce the syllabus for class 10 and 12 students by 15% for the 2025 board exam. Additionally, it was alleged that the CBSE regional officer Vikas Kumar Agrawal shared this information at a summit in Indore.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday rejected reports claiming a 15 % cut in the syllabus of class 10 & 12 students in the 2025 board exams. Besides, it also denied reports suggesting plans to conduct open-book exams for selected subjects.

The board clarified that there was no change either in the syllabus or the evaluation system and examination policy. This came after certain news outlets circulated reports that the CBSE has decided to reduce the syllabus for board exams.

What Is Open-Book Exam Controversy?

Besides the Class 10 & 12 syllabus reduction, media reports also mentioned that CBSE plans to conduct open-book examinations for some subjects from 2025, including English Literature and Social Science. This decision aims at reducing pressure on students as well as aligning with the New Education Policy.

“The board has neither issued any such notice nor made any changes to the evaluation system or examination policy,” CBSE said. It also clarified that information shall be published only on its official website or authorized channels.
