Sunjay Kapur, an entrepreneur, and polo player who was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor, has tragically died at the age of 53. The accident occurred on Thursday in London, at a polo game.
Reports suggest that Sunjay Kapur swallowed a bee during play accidentally. Immediately after that, he was heard saying, “I have swallowed something” and that proved to be his final words. This was heard by witnesses at the match. It was discovered later that the thing he swallowed was a bee, which stung him and resulted in suffocation. Thereafter, he had a heart stroke and died.
His business partner and close friend Suhel Seth informed ANI, “Sunjay died of a heart attack, apparently after swallowing a bee during a polo match in England.”
Sunjay Kapur is the former chairman of Sona Comstar, a large automobile manufacturing company. The company also issued an official statement that he died of a heart attack but they did not provide further details.
Sunjay was a well-known face in the social circuits of the world, though he was more often recognized by his previous association with Karisma Kapoor, he was a reputable businessman and an avid polo player. He supposedly was a good friend of Prince William of the UK and used to visit high-society events and polo tournaments around the world.
His last rites will likely take place in Delhi, however, there may be a delay because Sunjay was a U.S. citizen. His father-in-law Ashok Sachdev informed NDTV, “The postmortem is currently underway. Once the paperwork is complete, the body will be brought to India for the last rites.”
In 2003, Karisma Kapoor married Sunjay Kapur. Their two children are a daughter, Samaira (born in 2005) and a son, Kiaan (born in 2011). In 2014 the couple parted ways and in 2016 they were officially divorced. After the split, Karisma Kapoor has been taking care of the children as a single parent.
Sunjay later got married to a model and entrepreneur, Priya Sachdev. The two met in New York and after five years of courtship, they were married in a private wedding ceremony in Delhi. The pair has one son, Azarias Kapur.
